ProMusica Arizona Chorale and Orchestra, joined by the Carolyn Eynon Singers and PMAZ soloists Charissa Glazner, soprano, and Aaron Smith, tenor, closes its 2021-22 season in April 2022 with Misa Azteca, a concert piece for orchestra, choir, soloists and authentic Aztec percussion instruments. Full of vibrant rhythms and Mariachi-style harmonies, this major work is based on the Roman Catholic High Mass and verses from the Cantares Mexicanos, a collection of pre- and post-conquest verses of the Mexica (the Aztecs). It is sung in Latin, Spanish and Nahuatl (including translations) and it brings together two cultures and religions into an eight-movement, oratorio-style musical celebration.
California-based composer Joseph Julian Gonzales is an expert on Cantares Mexicanos, the oldest known compiled collection of Nahuatl songs and poetry which he uses as inspiration for many of his compositions. Misa Azteca has been performed at Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House and the Vatican.

Do you like birds? Butterflies? Arizona Riparian areas? From noon on April 5 to noon April 6, you can help one of the premier riparian preserves that attracts over 116 bird species and is designated as a Monarch Butterfly Waystation. To do so, participate in the state-wide AZ Gives Day event by supporting Black Canyon Heritage Park (BCHP) at https://www.azgives.org/BCHeritagePark.

The Black Canyon Heritage Park is one of the nearly 1,000 nonprofit organizations expected to participate in Arizona Gives Day, an online fundraising initiative that brings together Arizonans from across the state to raise awareness and financial support for a variety of nonprofit organizations. Since it began in 2013, it has raised over $30 million.  Last year, the event raised $7.1 million for 982 non-profits.

“This event will give us a state-wide opportunity to attract supporters to help us continue our improvement and maintenance programs for our Sonoran Desert riparian preserve that provides with experiences that instill respect, responsibility, and stewardship for the surrounding area,” said Bob Cothern, Chair, Black Canyon Heritage Park Coalition.“

The process is easy!! You can start March 16 but the best time is between noon April 5 and noon April 6.  During that 24-hour period, a donor will match the first $500 raised and BCHP will be eligible for some incentive prizes.  Go to https://www.azgives.org/BCHeritagePark.

"Oh, the thinks you can think" when Dr. Seuss' best-loved characters collide and cavort in an unforgettable musical caper! Now one of the most performed shows in America, Seussical is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! Tony winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Lucky Stiff, My Favorite Year, Once on This Island, Ragtime), have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big imagination – Jojo. The colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos. The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many "thinks." Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.
